Kaspersky Lab: Mobile Malware Increased in 2nd Quarter

The second quarter showed a wide variety of data-related threats not only for PC users but also for mobile users.  Among them were ‘Cyber espionage tools, targeted attacks, botnets, and major new mobile threats’ because of which Mobile Malware increased drastically for Android smartphones. Hacking attempts and stealing personal information is always a red hot issue in the Cyber world, that is why cyber crime teams work with all their efforts all over the world. The attackers even set by stealing personal information and cash flows, including virtual ones. Such data is with the Kaspersky Lab specialists. As expected the mobile platforms are no more safe as Mobile Malware increased. The number added to the anti-virus database versions of malware for mobile devices to 30 percent higher than the figure for the first quarter.

In early June, Kaspersky Lab unveiled a new ‘Cyber espionage’ network NetTraveler, which targeted attacks were more than 350 computer systems in 40 different countries across the globe. The victims included government agencies, embassies, companies from the oil and gas industries, research centres, military structures and public activists. Whew! that is a huge number of victims, but after this, these all have realized where their security stands. Not only Government officials must be more careful in handling such information but all must realize the risk of loosing data and personal privacy information.

Another example of ‘ Cyber espionage’ attacks on corporate sector have become online games sponsored by the hacker group Winnti. Starting from 2009 the year of action Winnti affected over 30 companies worldwide, in addition to intellectual property theft by malicious users were interested in digital certificates signed by the companies-developers of legitimate software and source code online games.

In March and April in connection with the theft of funds from bank accounts were arrested. Trojan infecting systems developers who creates botnets around the world and is committing fraud in online banking were tracked and were put behind bars. Now infecting systems’s popularity is decreasing slowly, but the fact that in June the share of such source codes, can provoke the appearance of similar programs.

However, hackers are now not only after the bank accounts but also the credit cards scams are increasing. In April, the Kaspersky Lab’s experts have discovered a series of attacks in which cyber criminals using Skype spreading malware to extract bitcoins, and a month later was registered on Brazilian phishing campaign aimed at stealing these virtual coins.

Kaspersky Lab: Mobile Malware Increased Further in 2nd Quarter

By the end of the second quarter, the number of mobile malware samples in Kaspersky Lab collection has exceeded 100 thousand. Almost all new malware is focused on Android – in particular, they found most difficult to date the Trojan Obad which has mobile broad functionality, including the sending of SMS messages to premium rate numbers, installation of other malware and send them via Bluetooth.

Compared to the first quarter change in the ranking of countries by the number of malicious Web hosting is getting lesser but Mobile Malware increased gradually. United States (24.4%) and Russia (20.7%) kept the leading position. The top ten countries, whose citizen that were most often confronted with malware on the Internet, with the exception of Vietnam, consists of the CIS countries. Russia (52.9%) in the list ranks second after Armenia (53.9%).
